-Smaller Buddha: Sakyamuni, the historical Buddha -Larger Buddha: Vairocana, the universal Buddha -Niche shaped like a halo–or mandorla–around the body -Buddhas were originally covered with pigment and gold -Caves were part of a vast complex of Buddhist monasteries, chapels, and sanctuaries.
